Our Vision, Ethos & Aims

At Ysgol Tir Morfa we aim to provide a happy, safe learning environment to nurture our pupils in lifelong communication, independence and life skills.

Learning to live, living to learn

To achieve this aim we will:

  • Facilitate learning experiences matched to their needs through specialised curriculum routes where communication (interaction) is paramount to ensure every pupil has a voice and can communicate their needs and choices
  • Provide a safe and nurturing school environment where pupils can achieve and challenge themselves
  • Know our pupils well and have high aspirations for them
  • Through a whole school embedded approach to PSE, increase the resilience, self-belief, self-esteem and self-confidence of every pupil
  • Work with parents, carers, governors and other professionals to ensure a high quality provision for every pupil and family at their individual level

Values Behaviour
Wellbeing, welfare and care At Ysgol Tir Morfa we are committed to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing for the whole school community (children, staff and families), and recognise how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives, in the same way as physical health. We aim to develop the skills necessary to live confidently with the demands of everyday life and lifelong learning; developing the capacity of learners to navigate life's opportunities and challenges. We employ a Pastoral Support Manager to work with and support pupils and their families. Our staff know our pupils and their individual needs well. We aim to build positive staff teams which are based on individual strengths and expertise.
Respect and Trust Our staff are trained in Pivotal Behaviour Management. Our school rules are Ready, Respectful and Safe. School staff aim to model positive, calm behaviours at all times and remain emotionally available to all our learners.
Happiness and Enjoyment Happy learners and a happy staff make for a happy school and a productive learning environment. We aim to provide stimulating, fun and engaging activities for all of our pupils.
Community and Environment We have close links with many businesses and organisations within the local and wider community. Our pupils are given many opportunities to practise and develop their basic skills, life and work skills in real life contexts within the community. Activities include travel training, shopping, and a wide range of work experience. We work independently, with Keep Wales Tidy and Countryside Services to look after our immediate and surrounding areas and are committed to achieving the Eco-Schools Award.
Wales and Welshness

Welsh Language and Culture is embedded into the day to day routines of the school.

We implement the Cymraeg Campus language charter and have achieved the Bronze award. Everyday Welsh words and phrases are used throughout the day in a range of contexts by both staff and learners. Welsh language patterns known as ‘Cymalau y Mis’ are shared monthly and their use is encouraged across school both formally and informally.  A group learners’ from across the school known as the ‘Criw Cymraeg’ help to promote and encourage the use of the Welsh language.  Enrichment opportunities are also planned, such as an annual ‘Wythnos Dewi Sant’ and school Eisteddfod, as well as other significant Welsh days throughout the year.  Teachers plan activities and experiences across the areas of learning to enrich learners use of Welsh within a range of contexts.  They also plan cultural visits to the local area.

Staff are encouraged to attend sabbaticals to further develop and their own use and understanding of Welsh.
Risk Our curriculum encourages and supports managed risk taking e.g. swimming, skiing, cycling, road safety skills, Forest School, Sailing. We aim to provide safe environments for pupils to challenge themselves.
Support and Collaboration Within our school we work with a wide range of support agencies to support the individual needs of our pupils. These include Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, CALDS, CAMHS, SALT and Careers Wales. We work closely with the Rhyl Learning Community and NWASSH to support each other for continuous development and learning.
